What’s the driver? Safety, cost or production?

In manufacturing, operations and process industries we’ve seen all three as key drivers.  In some organizations there is a perennial struggle balancing these drivers.  We have found that Star or Exemplary Performers in this industry have figured out how to balance these otherwise competing factors.  In just one case, we designed a new qualification program that was based on how the best performers actually did their job.  The results impacted multiple areas for the company:

1. Since the qualification program was built on internal best practices, it was more efficient, and people qualified faster.
2. Since best practices were leveraged across the workforce, new performers were proficient faster – which increased production and lowered costs.
3. Best practices also underscored the most critical safety aspects – along with detailed insights on “how to” accomplish work without any compromise to safety.
4. Criteria for excellent performance was embedded in the new qualification materials – and already qualified, existing employees with up to three years experience in role, asked for their own copies of the qualification materials because they lacked confidence in their own performance.
